About Polly

My grant writing journey began at the Alberta University of the Arts, where I was fortunate to benefit from several student funding programs. I dove in, applying for every opportunity I could find—even mistakenly submitting an application for a grant intended for third-year students while I was only in my second year. Imagine my surprise when I was notified that I’d still won!
Curious, I asked for more details and learned that several grant funds had gone unclaimed for multiple terms. This discovery piqued my interest: why were so many students leaving money on the table?
I realized not everyone enjoys combing through lengthy documents, analyzing spreadsheets to build budgets, or distilling the heart and soul of a project into a teeny tiny word count. As I began helping fellow students with their grant applications, I saw firsthand how challenging it can be to clearly communicate the important work that needs to be done and connect it meaningfully to a funder’s goals.
Over the years, as my interests expanded, I started to view the world systemically—all good work is interconnected. Whether it’s thriving agriculture, healthy business ecosystems, robust education and healthcare, or vibrant creative communities, I wanted to support it all.
Through my diverse experiences supporting small businesses, intentional communities, education centers, nonprofits, and artists, I’ve developed a suite of skills that make me a stronger grant writer. I’ve helped nonprofits and grassroots groups navigate year-long governance transitions and restructured financial systems for organizations experiencing rapid growth. I’ve built projects from pilots to being pillars of the community, and I’ve facilitated cross-sectoral collaboration towards mutual goals such as increased food security, healthier water systems, and greater biodiversity in our landscapes. My roles in project management, volunteer coordination, finance, and governance have all contributed to refining my grant writing expertise.
As you can probably tell, I love trying new things and taking on new challenges. With so many important causes in need of support, it’s always been hard to choose just one focus.
That’s when I had my lightbulb moment: grant writing allows me to support them all—across sectors, business types, visions, and goals. Strong grant writing can help anyone take their work to the next level.
